About the Authors:

Andris Kuprišs (1982) is a Latvian writer and translator. He studied journalism at the University of Latvia and obtained an MA in Photography from Goldsmiths University of London. In 2019 he published his first book, a collection of stories titled Berlin. Kuprišs’ essays and prose have been published in Rīgas LaiksVeto MagazineDomuzīmePunctum, and Satori magazines, among others.

Jana Egle (1963) is a Latvian poet and prose writer. Her first collection of poems Dzirdēt noklusēto [To Hear the Unsaid] was published in 2002. Egle's collection of stories Gaismā [Into the Light] won the Annual Latvian Literature Award 2017 and her episodic novel Svešie jeb Miļeņkij ti moi [Strangers or Milenky ty moy] was shortlisted for the Annual Latvian Literature Award 2019.

Laura Vinogradova (1984) is a writer of prose and children’s literature. Her debut book for children Snīpulītis no Snīpuļciems (2017) was immediately followed by two collections of stories – Izelpas [Exhale] (2018) and Lāču kalns [Bear Mountain] (2018). Her novel The River was shortlisted for the Annual Latvian Literature Award. 

About the Translators:

Uldis Balodis holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara and has studied over 30 languages including Navajo, Sanskrit, and Livonian. His translations include such works as Nakedness by Zigmunds Skujiņš, In the Shadow of Death by Rūdolfs Blaumanis, and Trillium: A Collection of Livonian Poetry.

Ian Gwin is a writer and translator from Seattle, Washington. He holds an MA in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington. His own writing has been published in Drifting Sands, Kingfisher, and Mayfly Haiku. Berlin is his first translation from the Latvian to be published in English.

Kaija Straumanis is an award-winning translator, and editor at Open Letter Books. She has translated books by Inga Ābele, Inga Gaile, Zigmunds Skujiņš, Jānis Joņevs, and Andris Kalnozols, among others.
